Los Angeles now has TWO LGBT Toastmasters Chapters, both sponsored by the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (LAGLCC) and its Young Professionals Council. Toastmasters is a respected and honored worldwide non-profit organization of small clubs where people practice and receive coaching in public speaking and organizational leadership skills and techniques. 12,000+ clubs worldwide include 125,000+ active members.
The first club, CHAMBER COMMUNICATORS, was chartered in the Fall of 2007. It currently meets in Sherman Oaks the 2nd and 4th Monday nights of each month at 7:30-9:30 pm at the Lamplighter Restaurant on Van Nuys Blvd. a few blocks N. of the 101 Ventura Freeway. Guests always welcome to come check us out. The club has 15 members, and a current membership drive with a goal of 25 members by the end of summer.
The newest club, WEST HOLLYWOOD TOASTMASTERS, was chartered with 26 members June 15, 2009, and already has 31 members. It meets the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month at Plummer Park, 7377 Santa Monica Blvd. (Just East of Astroburger.) A Toastmaster senior executive, present at Mondays Charter Ceremony, called the club the most advanced and sophisticated new club she had ever seen!
LAGLCC members who would like to practice their public speaking skills -- brush up and be critiqued on movement, gesture, eye contact with audience, organization, wording, storytelling, plus techniques of informative, persuasive, motivational and inspirational speaking, AND who need practice eliminating "ah's," "er's" and "um's" from their speeches, come check us out and perhaps join. Guests are always welcome. To join, you need to commit to at least six months attending (dues of about $35 are collected every six months) and there's a one time $22 dollar 'initiation' fee for first time members.
The Chamber is proud of its association with Toastmasters clubs. It is our hope that many LAGLCC members will find these clubs an invaluable resource; and that thes Clubs will provide our community -- and our businesses -- with a source for practiced and experienced speakers and leaders.
Thanks.
Lance Webster, LAGLCC Advisor; Toastmasters clubs' Founder & Mentor
Randy Malmud, LAGLCC President
